Texas to Vermont
Yes folks, it's true. Desktop Miracles is a Texas-based corporation, founded by native and almost-native Texans who got tired of the stress of big-city life and the boiling temperatures of the Texas summers, and decided to make a change. We are fortunate to be one of those cliched semi-virtual companies. Our clients, vendors, and freelancers are nationwide, indeed worldwide, and the majority of our communication is through the wonders of the phone, fax, email, and Fedex.
We can be located literally anywhere, and we decided to take advantage of that by exposing ourselves to a new lifestyle:
We were looking for several things in a new home and business location:
- We wanted to slow down and try small town life
- We wanted to experience an entirely different area of the US
- We wanted a location with many interesting places in close proximity
- We wanted a four season climate, without blazing hot summers.
- We wanted to try living in the mountains with lots of recreation opportunities.
After evaluating most of New England, we picked gorgeous Stowe, Vermont, a quintessential small New England village.
We moved ourselves and the business on July 1, 1999, and it's the best decision we ever made....
Stowe has everything we wanted, plus lots of premium resources since it's a high-end ski town and resort area, great internet and business services, and nearby airports and cities: We are an easy 40 minute drive from Burlington, Vermont, 2 hours from Montreal, Quebec and much of Eastern Canada, only 3 hours to Boston, and 5 to Manhattan.
Now if only we could get great Tex Mex, BBQ, Blue Bell, and Shiner Bock, this would be absolutely perfect.
Top 5 Reasons we moved from Dallas, Texas to Stowe, Vermont
- Dallas
TX: Almost 6 million people in the DFW metro area
Stowe VT: 4350 in Stowe, and only 650,000 in entire state!!
- Dallas
TX: 1999: Two of the 5 most dangerous intersections
in the US were part of our daily commute, 19 major freeways are the primary
access routes around the metroplex. Clogged with stupid people in oversized
SUVs they have no need for, smashing into each other, and one simple
errand takes your entire lunch hour
Stowe VT: You can ALL of your daily errands in 30 minutes, cause they're in the village. All roads in town are one lane in each direction, and there's only one stoplight in town, a flashing light of course, at a three-way stop sign!!
- Dallas
TX: Weeknight softball leagues with thousands of players in highly
structured leagues, golf only during the off hours because its too hot
to play mid day and too crowded on the weekends, and post game hangouts
at XYZ chain restaurant
Stowe VT: Weeknight ice hockey and softball leagues where everyone knows each other, teams loan each other players, and we play as long as we want. Golf at the club is almost walk-up status anytime there isn't a tournament, with bright sunny days in the 80s, all all winter we have great snow skiing at Stowe Mountain Resort right in town, ice skating, and snowshoeing all winter. Then retire to a local pub where everyone knows your name and the bartender starts pouring the minute you walk in the door, if he's back from hockey.
- Dallas TX: Crime such a concern that there are dozens of high-security
gated communities and homes with multi-level security systems, weapons,
panic rooms, and armed neighborhood security guards
Stowe VT: Virtually no violent or serious crime, and the minor stuff usually runs towards stolen canoes and sunglasses! Many people leave their front doors unlocked all the time, and in winter it's more common than not to see people leave their cars running, keys in ignition and the heaters ON when going into the post office or stores. Guess the attitude is that if you are so bad off that you need to steal a car when its only 5 degrees, you need it more than me...! - Dallas
TX, Summer
